The Space Race was just one of the many factors in the Cold War. It was quite literally a race between the United States and Soviet Union to see who could outperform the other in aeronautical feats. The Soviet Union was the first nation to launch a man-made object in orbit around the earth. This spurred the United States to go bigger and bolder.
